I read the man of the crowd, and then listened a podcast episode on it (somewhat confusingly, The H.P Lovecraft Literary Podcast – EP 330)
I found the short story to be very inspiring, and it has set the foundation of my current concept. Im currently intending to create
On my walk to LCC for work and lectures I often find myself struggling with interpreting other peoples direction when walking, I often cling to edges of paths
I went to a house party on the 20th of October –
the apartment was completely full and I stood in the kitchen with the comfort of an open windows fresh air for a considerable time – I thought that instead of attempting to wade through the crowd I’d take some notes for my project:
Eavesdropping but in a pedestrian (public) environment, Exterior vs interior, Amplification of background sound louder close proximal sound Crowd Dynamics - are you trying to listen to a specific thing and follow it around, or is it more hive minded social, finishing each others sentences, the crowd mimicking the individual The individual and the social The space? A public square, a street? A street forces direction, left or right, up or down. A open square forces awkward interpretation in movement. a street lamp, a spotlight, the north star The confined social space, pushing and shoving, uncertain you look for the area of easiest mobility, through the flow of people, like water through cracks The open space creates an uncertainty in movement, unpredictable movement? Creating paths with the largest amount of space between, it would be strange to face someone and walk straight towards them - brushing past them - instead of creating as much room as you can.
I was reminded of the cocktail party effect, I read about it and other psychoacoustic phenomenon in Audio Rorschach by Joe Banks – I generally struggle with hearing people in noisy environments, It was part of why I always feared crowds when I was young, particuarly when I had hyperacusis, though its hard to say which came first (the fear of crowds or the hyperacusis). – It would be interesting to explore psychoacoustic phenomenon in the game environment
